BACKGROUNDAutocross is a form of automotive competition emphasizing precision driving and car control in which one car at a time negotiates a set course in the shortest possible time. A mini-road course is set up with pylons on large unobstructed, paved area such as a mall parking lot or airport tarmac. Cars are placed into one of many classes - Stock, Street Prepared, Prepared, Modified - based on performance potential. Entrants get 3-6 timed runs through the 40-70 second course which has maneuvers like slaloms, chicanes, and hairpin turns. A driver's fastest time through the course plus penalties for any displaced pylons equals his score. The top scorers in each class, which may be separated by only thousandths of a second, receive trophies. This is a safe and inexpensive test of driving ability most often using one's everyday car. These events are also known for the friendship and comradary among the participants.
